Frishberg hosts a conference in Washington, D.C., with U.S.-Ukraine Business Council and the Embassy of Ukraine on "Doing Business in Ukraine in 2010"

On June 10, 2010, Frishberg & Partners organized a conference in Washington, D.C. together with U.S.-Ukraine Business Council and the Embassy of Ukraine, entitled, “Doing Business in Ukraine in 2010.” The distinguished speakers included:

Morgan Williams is Director, Government Affairs, Washington Office for the SigmaBleyzer Private Equity Investment Management Group. He is also the President of the U.S.-Ukraine Business Council, a non-profit U.S. organization established in October 1995 to advance U.S. companies' trade and investment interests in Ukraine.

Alex Frishberg is a senior partner of the law offices of Frishberg & Partners. He graduated from Washington University School of Law (J.D., 1988), practiced at Hogan & Hartson, D.C. office, before opening his law firm in Kiev, Ukraine, in 1991. Mr. Frishberg’s practice areas include: Mergers and Acquisitions, Joint Ventures, Real Estate, Privatization. Membership: District of Columbia Bar, American Bar Association; Chairman, Legal, Government Relations and Economic Committee, American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, 1992-1995 and 1999.

Ambassador Roman Popadiuk was the first U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine. He has successfully supported U.S. companies and individuals exploring various business opportunities worldwide. Ambassador Popadiuk served as Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy Press Secretary for Foreign Affairs under President George Bush, a position he also held toward the end of President Reagan's administration. He is a retired member of the Senior Foreign Service and has received a number of awards, including the State Department's Superior Honor Award and the Meritorious Honor Award.

Anders ?slund has been a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute since 2006. He is also an adjunct professor at Georgetown University. He examines the economies of Russia, Ukraine, and Eastern Europe. He worked at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace from 1994 to 2005; he also worked at the Brookings Institution and the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies. Mr. ?slund served as an economic adviser to the governments of Russia, Ukraine, and Kyrgyzstan.

Alexander Paskhaver is a world-recognized expert in privatization matters. Education: Ph.D., Institute of Economy of the Academy of Science of the USSR, Moscow (1972). He has advised several of Ukrainian Presidents, Prime Ministers, as well as the State Property Fund, where he co-authored key legislation that governed large and small-scale privatization. Professional Affiliations: Advisor on Economic Policy to the President of the Ukraine and former Consultant to the Ukrainian State Property Fund; editor-in-chief of the bulletin “The Ukrainian Economic Monitor”.

Roundtable: “Foreign Investment in Ukrainian Agriculture”

On March 11, 2010, Frishberg & Partners organized and moderated a roundtable on “Foreign Investment in Ukrainian Agriculture,” which took place before the Kiev foreign diplomatic and business community. The main speakers included:

Mr. Roman Fedorowycz, an ex-founder, CEO and land acquisition manager for Ukrainian Agrarian Investments, Ltd., one of the largest farming companies in Ukraine and Europe with over 300,000 hectares. Roman has close to 20 years’ working experience in Ukraine.

Mr. Jens Bruno, who works with the agricultural holding company called “Grain Alliance” in Ukraine. They control roughly 40,000 hectares. The company has been active in Ukraine for the last 10 years, but they have expanded especially rapidly over the last five years when Ukraine had very little control from any government officials. Mr. Bruno has also been involved in the construction of the first bio-ethanol plant in Ukraine and the CIS.

The speakers compared their strategies for effectuating investment into Ukrainian farm operations, and discussed their trials and tribulations in agri-farm business in Ukraine.
